What a surge protection device does
A surge protection device limits transient overvoltages and diverts the excess current safely to earth before it reaches connected equipment. Surges can come from a nearby or direct lightning strike, or from switching operations on the power network, and can damage drives, controllers, computers and communication equipment in an instant.
Type 1, Type 2 and Type 1 + 2 SPDs
Type 1 SPDs are designed for partial lightning currents and are typically installed where the supply enters a building that has external lightning protection. Type 2 SPDs protect against induced surges and are installed at distribution boards. A combined Type 1 + 2 (Class B + C) device provides both in a single unit at the main incoming panel.
TOPBAS TB7K320T12L specifications

Why SPDs belong in every lightning protection system
A lightning arrester protects the structure from a direct strike, but surges can still travel through power and data cables into the building. That is why a complete lightning protection system from Henel Engineers includes surge protection for the electrical installation.
